About us

Benchmark Building Supplies are a North West's based Builders Merchant, trading from seven trading locations around the M60 Greater Manchester Inner Ring road

Our fleet of eleven crane off load vehicles deliver more than 100 drops every day, supplying building materials to a live customer base of over 1200 construction companies of varying sizes.

Founded in 1996, we identified a niche in the marketplace where the general builder was being neglected, he had lost his identity and was treated as a number, not as a customer. We at Benchmark set out to put that right. Some years on and with a turnover exceeding £12m, our perception was right all along. Our loyal customer base recognises service and quality as the norm, prices are competitive and deliveries are always made on time.

We have secured many large Public Sector contracts and have become suppliers to many of local authorities and large housing associations throughout the North West. Our success has been largely down to the company employees, who we see as our most asset. Their commitment and loyalty know no bounds and a clear majority of staff have been handpicked and headhunted for their specific skills and expertise.

In 2016 Benchmark was acquired by Saint-Gobain which enables us to retain our high quality levels of service but gives us access to a much wider product range to ensure we can get our customers exactly what they require.


At Benchmark, we look after our customers and use a network of services to benefit our SME contractors. At the height of the downturn we produced a recession survival kit, where our doors were open to assist and utilise the benefits of scale of our 1200 live trading accounts.

Customers were encouraged to use our resources in all matters of Debt Collection, Marketing, Tender Writing, Health and Safety and Human Resource facilities. Over fifty clients were assisted and benefited from our experience in the market place. In many cases jobs were saved and companies able to continue trading through the economic hostility.


Our commitment to the communities of Greater Manchester We are committed to working in ways that are good for our business and good for the communities of the Greater Manchester area which we serve. We pledge to contribute to sustainable development and to work with our employees, their families, our local communities and society at large for the good of all.

Working with local businesses Benchmark has assisted more than 200 local businesses by providing training and support in subjects such as Health & Safety, and Equality & Diversity. Our work in partnership with 'Tameside Works First', and 'Stockport Boost' has enabled over 20 businesses become accredited local authority suppliers and successfully bid for new business. Our 'Recession Survival Kit' was launched in response to the credit crunch and generated more than one million pounds’ worth of new business for our customers. It provided credit referencing, competitive insurance quotations, and marketing support to independent small local businesses. Benchmark's debt collection and human resource services were also made available, and for example successfully challenged over £45,000 of bad debt on behalf of third parties, and assisted with contract of employment, CRB checks for customer employees and another certification. And of course, we practise what we preach as an equal opportunities employer with 59 employees working at our seven Greater Manchester trading outlets.

Growing the next generation Benchmark is a 'marriage bureau' – we have introduced apprentices and college students to local builders. We have arranged free or subsidised training via our partnerships with colleges and skill centres. More than 150 apprentices have been placed with local businesses through our involvement in the last 3 years.

Helping Communities In recent years Benchmark has grant aided more than £90,000 of diverse community projects including disabled access for schools, new stands and pavilions for sports teams plus sponsorship for nearly twenty amateur clubs and societies. We believe we have a Corporate and Social Responsibility to put things back into the Greater Manchester communities we serve. All our staff are openly encouraged to carry out work in the community for charity functions and fundraising activities. Our close relationship with Manchester City in the Community has seen us fund many Charity Events throughout the last three years.
